ルカによる福音書24:13-27 Luke 24:13-27,
Jesus was resurrected on the third day after his death on the cross. On the morning of the third day, the women who went to Jesus’ tomb were told by the angel, “He is not here, for he has risen.” However, when Jesus’ disciples heard this from the women, they did not understand the meaning of what the angel said and did not believe it, because the eyes of their hearts were blocked by the thought that a dead person could not be resurrected.
On the afternoon of the day of Jesus’ resurrection, two disciples were walking towards a village called Emmaus, about 12 km from the city of Jerusalem. A man came up to them and started walking with the two disciples and asked them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” The one of the two, named Cleopas, asked back, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” The man asked again, “What things?” Then the two disciples said the various things they had been talking about. They told him that last week Jesus was crucified and put to death in the city of Jerusalem, that today was the third day, that earlier today some women who believed in Jesus went to his tomb and found his body gone, that the angel told them that he had risen, and that the other disciples went to the tomb and Jesus’ body had really gone.
Then the man said. “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” Then he explained the words of the Old Testament and told them stories about the suffering and glory that the Saviour would undergo. What kind of stories did he tell? For example, in the Old Testament, Isaiah 53:11 says, “My servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.” This is a prophecy of Jesus’ suffering on the cross for peoples’ sins, isn’t it? And Isaiah 52:13 says, “Behold, my servant shall act wisely; he shall be high and lifted up, and shall be exalted.” This is a prophecy that Jesus, who suffered on the cross to atone for many peoples’ sins, will be resurrected and lifted up to heaven to sit on the throne of glory, isn’t it?
As the two disciples listened to the explanation of these prophecies, they gradually understood that the death of Jesus on the cross was not the end. The eyes of their hearts, which had been blocked, were opened and they began to see that Jesus has risen. Later, the two disciples said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us while he talked to us on the road, while he opened to us the Scriptures? (v. 32) ” Yes, it was the resurrected Jesus who walked with them and explained the Bible to them. Jesus walked with those who could not believe, so that they could see that there is a resurrection even after death! He is the one who makes us to understand that even if we die, there is a resurrection!
